Budapest city poster with the memorial "Shoes on the Danube Bank"
In Budapest, one is often reminded of the atrocities that took place during the Second World War, including the terrible killing of countless Jews. One of the most horrific stories is the execution of up to 3,500 men, on the edge of the Danube, so that their bodies ended up in the water. Before being shot, they were ordered to remove their shoes, which were subsequently sold.
We were out photographing the memorial in connection with our photo trip to Budapest in autumn 2022.
