Have you been to Berlin you probably know Ampelmännchen. You may not know it, but the little man at the red and green pedestrian traffic lights, respectively, is a little ingenious design icon dating back to old East Berlin.

City poster with design icon from Berlin
It is, of course, a question of temperament as to whether the old East Germany was thought to have contributed much in design. Ampelmännchen however, is definitely one of the successes. The little man who adorns the traffic signals for pedestrians. He still appears in all the former East Berlin traffic intersections, but has also found a place in several intersections in what was former West Berlin.
He is sometimes mistakenly described as Ampelmann, but he was actually the man on the West Berlin traffic lights.
Ampelmännchen was "invented" by a psychologist who believed that it was easier to get people to follow the signals if one was greeted by kindness. A thought that did not always have a tailwind in old East Germany.
