Manhattan is - largely - intersected by a street grit of long Avenues that go north-south and Streets that go east-west. All the avenues are unidirectional with 4-5 lanes, of which there is always plenty of traffic. Just as strenuous as it can be to drive a car in the traffic of Manhattan, just as impressive it is to stand and watch all of life.

1st Avenue is the easternmost of all the Avenues, and is thus closest to the East River. it is certainly not one of the city's most famous Avenues, but in return you can get a good view of the gondola that crosses the East River and ends at Roosevelt Island.
There are many who are not aware of it, but yes - there is a gondola on steel wire, which is part of New York's public transport system, and therefore is open to everyone. It is definitely a nice trip that, in addition to the slightly different experience, also provides a quiet break, with a nice view.
